A landmark case that involved the motel located in Mississippi included the decision of a franchisee’s request to rent rooms in the motel to an African American family because of his perception that the family’s behavior was unconstitutional. Based on the decision of the court that the proprietor acted in accordance to the United States Government ban on discrimination on the basis of gender, race, or the nationality. The United States Department of Justice claimed that the hotel been discriminatory towards African American because of their situation as criminals. According to the court, the motivation of the owner was to discriminate against African Americans due to their race. It was a violation of the principle that equal protection is provided by the law.
Another landmark case from Mississippi included the motel V. United States of America in the case of Brush vs. Duval. The case was about race discrimination in a hotel room, involving a guest from the white race who had been staying in a motel that belonged to the group. The U.S. Department of Justice declared that it will not file its own lawsuit against the group.
As a result, the U.S. Department of Justice has left the past decisions in effect of the 1964 civil rights law still in force. The actions that are inspired by the Supreme Court’s prior decisions will not be enforced in Mississippi. The Mississippi state government had requested the federal government to file a lawsuit against the motel, claiming that the motel’s policy of not permitting blacks to stay at its 4-star hotel was in breach of the Constitution and the 1963 1964 civil rights statute.

The court ruled that the establishment had violated the 14th amendment of the Constitution that guarantees the right to equal treatment in all state legislation. It was clear that the court found that black men were discriminated against by the hotel’s refusal to let them sleep at its five-star motel. It was in its right to deny the request of accommodation based on race. The landmark case caused an important shift in business of motels in Mississippi as a number of new motel chains opened in the state.
