The Digital News Initiative (DNI) is a European organisation established by Google to “develop high quality journalism through digital innovation and technology”. It includes an “Innovative Research Fund” worth Euros 15 million, which in 2021 released grants to 461 projects in thirty-six countries across Europe. Among these countries are Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Poland, Iceland, Portugal, and Turkey. The size of the European Union as a whole is over three hundred countries, or thereabouts, and there are many smaller countries within this union. What makes the Digital News Initiative (DNI) so unique is its commitment to quality journalism. In fact, the DNI website states:
“The European digital news initiative is made up of members from around the globe who share a vision of promoting innovation, technological change and transparency in the EU area. This provides a forum for raising debate on important topical issues, and for providing information and knowledge on areas of mutual interest.” This commitment to providing quality journalism is admirable and reflects the dedication and commitment to ensuring that the EU can continue to uphold high standards of governance and quality in the areas of innovation, journalism and technology.
One of the ways that digital news journalism can benefit the EU is through the growth and development of up-and-coming small enterprises in member states. These new businesses would benefit greatly from having access to the funding and other support that the European digital news initiative has been able to provide. Small businesses form the heart of the modern economy, and it is vital that they remain viable and growing. It has been clear that the lack of venture capital funding has had a negative effect on many small companies, who have seen their sales suffer. Agency may be that there is an opportunity for the DNI to promote new ventures in member states that have not been previously explored. This would also provide the opportunity to provide more affordable and efficient broadband access, something that is badly needed in some areas across the EU.
A working group was established in January this year as part of the Digital News Initiative strategy. Agency is made up of members from across the globe who are passionate about the values of innovation, transparency and social responsibility. This group works with the European Commission to develop and implement policies that will enhance the value of the digital single market. It is hoped that the success of the working group will lay the foundation for a number of future projects and policies to benefit the whole of the single market. Some topics that are likely to be discussed include improving access to content on the web and ensuring that content is properly labeled, to combat the problem of “plagiarism”.
Another major benefit of the DNI is its focus on the advancement of the rapidly developing European online and Internet marketplace. Many businesses around the world are now beginning to realise the importance of the potential available digital opportunities provided by the internet. The increasing number of new business models and the associated costs have forced media organisations to look at new ways of maximising their share of the global audience. One such innovation is the establishment of the European Journalism Expeditions, which aims to encourage European innovation in the business environment.
The Journalism Expeditions programme is led by the European Council for Research Conventions (CEREC). The aim of the initiative is to foster international cooperation, build bridges with other regional and international organisations and increase the diversity of the European marketplace. In line with this strategy, publishers are being encouraged to co-operate actively with businesses to promote a better coverage of their niche markets and, at the same time, increase their share of the global readership.
While there is no clear indication yet of any significant success so far, the Digital News Initiative has shown an effective and measurable impact on publishers in several sectors. A recent study carried out by Le Figueur, a French publishing company, showed that the number of articles produced by European companies using European journalism standards increased by 20% when the initiative was introduced. This means that more businesses are now relying on the services of European journalists for the content they publish. A recent survey carried out by the E.ON business, a British oil and gas group, showed that there has been a marked improvement in the way their media outlets are covered by the industry news portals.
Another benefit of the Digital News Initiative has been its focus on quality journalism. It is widely believed that quality journalism is one of the pillars supporting the flourishing industry in Europe. Agency are already taking advantage of this fact, by investing in quality journalism in order to earn greater revenue from their websites. Moreover, many publishers have also found ways to increase their presence online, thereby boosting their revenue even further. These developments are a clear indication that the Digital News Initiative has succeeded in establishing a positive influence on the increasing number of publications in the European markets.
