The retina scanner, sometimes referred to as a computerized infrared camera or CIC camera, is used for two primary functions in ophthalmology. (Ophthalmology refers to the study of the eye.) A retinal scan or ripectomy is a biophysical technique which uses different infrared patterns on the patient’s retina to identify abnormalities. It’s not to be mistaken with other ophthalmological techniques: iridology, commonly known as an” Iris Scan”, and computer-assisted ophthalmography, also known as CIC. This technique is used primarily to detect glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and retinal detachment. When performed properly, it is noninvasive, painless and produces clear images of the retina.
In order for a scan to produce a detailed representation of the retina, it must perform many different tasks. Initially, the clinician must place the subject in a comfortably warm environment, such as a doctor’s office or bedroom. A small retinal flare device is then inserted into the eye. This unit contains a computer, scanner and software which simultaneously process and image the patient’s retinas. Once this preliminary process is complete, the retina scanner begins its work.
In order for a retina scanner to determine where the light is coming from within the eye, it needs to measure the position of the pupil. The pupil is the black part of the eye, shaped like a round opening. As humans mature, the size of the pupil changes, which allows more light to enter the eye through the pupil. In addition, the shape and size of the iris, or the colored ring, can also vary, depending on age and ethnicity. A computer program takes these measurements and combines them to produce a digital image of the human eye. The resulting image is then processed and sent to a computer where it is displayed on the screen of a retina scanner.
A color filter is placed over the images to create a visible pattern of colors which are used by the retina scanner. As the retina changes shape, the pattern of color will change as well. If the pattern consists of many colors, this provides better accuracy in determining where light is coming from within the eye. However, if the retina pattern is very thin, the ability to detect light at various distances can be impaired. In this case, a computer application is used to help with determining the retinal condition of the patient.
One of the most important functions of the retina scanner is to detect vessels containing blood. These vessels are necessary for the proper functioning of the eye, and if they become damaged or blocked, vision can be affected. Some of the most common causes of blocked blood vessels include glaucoma, cancer, or surgery. Another important function of the scanner is to prevent damage to the eye by allowing the blood vessels to return to their correct sizes before they undergo damage. This helps restore normal function to vision.
When performing retinal scanning, a variety of different tools are used. One of these tools is an iris scan, which uses the principle of laser light detection. The iris contains rods and thin layers of cells which reflect the light passing through them, allowing the scanner to determine where the light is coming from.
The type of retina scanner used depends on the need of the patient. For example, those who have crossed eyes often require the iris recognition tool because it helps determine when the eye is closed properly. This is necessary so that there is no chance that an eye injury will occur while closing the eye. This particular type of contactless technology is often associated with laser eye surgery.
The retina scanner used in conjunction with laser eye surgery is one of the most accurate methods available. The results are absolutely precise and can be used to correct eye alignment and restore vision in a very quick manner. Another major benefit of using retinal scanners is the patient is able to see clearly again and can participate in all normal activities without concern for continued difficulties. In marketing of individuals who suffer from nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, retinal scans can provide the diagnosis and proper treatment much more quickly than if they attempted to treat these conditions on their own. The technology has been developed to a high degree and is often used in the process of cataract surgery.
