It seems like there is a new buzzword in town – “how to become an activist.” There is a certain amount of confusion about the idea of engaging in political activism. Is it “insider strategy” or a more direct approach to change the world as we know it? Many young people are wondering how to make the jump from tweeting twits to attending political demonstrations and sit-ins. The answer, unfortunately, is that most activists fail at both.
I was just going through this very thought recently. After agency , I’ve been on twitter awhile and have given some thought to how to become an activist. It has always seemed kind of confusing to me because I didn’t quite understand the difference between “tweeting” and participating in online protests. And then I read an article by feminist writer Camryn Butler about why participation in online protest movements isn’t really how to become an activist.
The biggest problem with most activism today is the focus on social media. Activists use social media to call people to action and to advocate for their cause. Activists also use social media to strategize and organize and to spread information about upcoming events and projects. However, it seems that those involved in political action aren’t necessarily paying attention to what their online buddies are saying.
That’s my major problem. I love to use twitter because it allows me to reach a huge number of followers within a short period of time. I also find it refreshing to engage people directly, instead of getting my information passed through a bunch of filters. So I get the impression that a lot of activists aren’t paying attention to how they use twitter. But if you’re going to use twitter to engage people in political action, you need to pay attention.
The problem with how to become an activist is that most activists fail to understand how to use twitter to their advantage. The problem with twitter at large, is that people on the platform think it’s just about business. People think that they can use twitter to promote themselves, and market their brand. agency is the worst thing that you can do when it comes to how to become an activist.
If agency want to know how to become an activist, the first thing that you need to do is focus on your social media marketing. You need to learn how to connect with people on the platform, and find common interests. People will support you, if you show them that you have some common interests with them. Even if you have absolutely no connection to whatever issue they’re talking about, if you show that you care about the people who follow you on twitter, then you’ll begin to build a base of followers who will eventually be your advocates.
Another thing that you can do, when learning how to use Twitter to your advantage, is to start following other activists. If you can find tweets that are particularly interesting, you might want to re-tweet them yourself. agency , you can continue to educate yourself on the latest happenings, while also encouraging other people to follow in your footsteps. Eventually, you’ll come to the point where you’ll want to do a little bit of social media work yourself.
One of the main debates when it comes to how to become an activist is whether or not you should “do it yourself” by tweeting updates yourself, or whether you should hire a company to handle it for you. Both have their strong points. If you feel comfortable doing it yourself, then definitely do it. However, if you feel more comfortable spending a couple hundred dollars a month for a professional company to handle everything for you, then it might be worth at least considering the option of hiring a professional. At the very least, you’ll have the benefit of having their expertise at your beck and call whenever you feel the need to educate yourself on an issue or simply to just disseminate information. Whatever you choose, do your research, and you just might find that it’s the best move you’ve ever made!
