Fulfillment center and fulfillment house are modern terms for an automated packing warehouse. The term has been coined in the mid-1990s, and basically means that an automated packing plant or warehouse is located onsite to perform a variety of tasks. One of the most popular types of automated plants is a fulfillment center. A fulfillment center basically consists of several different automated packing plant or warehouses. In other words, it is a large building or warehouse full of packing machines.
Most businesses utilize a fulfillment center to provide their customers with high-quality, personalized shipping options. Fulfillment centers accept and pack orders for retailers, manufacturers, distributors and individuals. They typically ship products directly from the manufacturer to the final destination.
The major service providers in the industry offer a variety of services to their customers. Some services include inventory management, order tracking, carrier pick and pack, credit card order placement, and freight bill pay. Inventory management helps in the management of sales and product availability. This enables retailers to make informed decisions on where to source out items that are not immediately in stock. Order tracking keeps track of orders for goods that are in inventory, as well as those that have become available but are still being fulfilled.
Carrier pick and pack plays an integral role in order fulfillment. It ensures that goods arrive at the right place and on time. It also makes sure that goods are delivered in a safe manner. Many fulfillment providers have integrated technology that includes GPS systems for real-time location of items and packages, and can easily monitor customs and shipping rates.
An important aspect of an ecommerce business is its inventory. An efficient inventory management system is critical to the success of any retail business. It helps retailers keep track of their inventory levels, thereby enabling them to make informed decisions on where to source out additional stock. If the warehouse capacity is inadequate, it will be impossible for the retailer to meet orders that come in. Thus, a fulfillment company must ensure that adequate space is kept available in the warehouse, as well as storage levels that allow easy access to the items stored.
A distribution center enables ecommerce retailers to fulfill their orders through multiple shipping channels. It ensures that the retailers have access to the products when they are in demand, without having to rely on warehouses or distribution centers that may experience delays in shipments. In addition, distribution centers can be extremely expensive to set up, operate, and maintain. A fulfillment company, on the other hand, uses its own in-house workforce, as well as warehouse equipment and vehicles, to ensure that the retailer has access to the products when it is most needed.
A warehouse that is used interchangeably with a fulfillment center often uses large buildings or warehouses, rather than smaller ones. Large buildings provide larger receiving areas for receiving shipments, in addition to the ability to house the warehouse staff and equipment needed to move inventory from store locations to the warehouses. Warehouse equipment, on the other hand, consists of refrigeration systems, water storage tanks, and loading docks. Warehouses are often used interchangeably with distribution centers, as they offer many of the same functions.
As an e-commerce business owner, you should know the difference between a fulfillment center and a distribution center. The former is designed to automate the warehousing process, while the latter does the same but for a different purpose. If your inventory simply comes and goes, rather than coming and going, you will want to consider investing in a distribution center. On the other hand, if you frequently ship merchandise back and forth to different stores, you will want to simply look for a warehouse that can provide you with the storage space you need. By knowing the difference between these two types of operations, you will be able to choose the one that is right for your own company.
