Rent email lists lets marketers segment email lists based largely on pre-defined criteria like demographics, interests, or buying habits. The ability to rent email lists gives marketers the power to build customer loyalty and brand affinity. For e-commerce sites, renting lists enables marketers to create and manage database connections and build email addresses that reflect their online business. It also enables them to create targeted niche markets by adjusting the list of subscribers to each piece of information.
This form of direct marketing has been used for many years as a way to rent email lists. Marketers rent lists to people who are likely to be interested in their product, but who have not necessarily visited the site yet. By doing this, they can get immediate responses and build trust with these individuals. They can also use such rented lists to test market and track return on investment as well.
There are many reasons why marketers rent email lists. Some use such lists to build databases of potential customers that will make way for later marketing strategies and endeavors. Other marketers rent email lists to avoid the expense of purchasing email addresses from other companies. And still other marketers rent email lists for completely ethical reasons: to build a database that’s pretty good, and then to send periodic promotional information via email. In all these instances, it’s important to remember two important things when selecting which list you’ll rent or buy:
First, when selecting a list, it’s important to know how often you plan on using it. If your strategy involves regular contact with potential clients, then buying email lists would probably be a good idea. But if your goal is to focus your time and efforts on only a select number of people, renting a list would be more cost-effective in the long run. Note, though, that even in situations where you are just sending periodic updates to current subscribers, it can be worthwhile to rent email lists. This is because the cost of making new accounts may be much higher than the cost of maintaining current ones. For this reason, it can be helpful to think about how often you plan to make updates to your company’s website, and then go about choosing which list to rent from.
Second, when you rent email lists, it’s important to consider how you will update the list. Many marketers choose to rent lists because it’s a cheaper alternative to purchasing them. This works well for individuals and small businesses, but it can also work out poorly for marketers who have bigger, more established email campaigns. If you don’t plan on staying on top of your business’s email list maintenance, it’s best to choose a list broker instead of a list rental agency. When you work with a list broker, you’ll have a reliable third party who can help you keep track of the progress of your email campaign as it progresses.
Third, when you rent email lists, it’s important to ask yourself if a good marketer would be willing to pay for a consistent supply of leads, even when that marketer doesn’t plan to actively use that list. Marketers who are constantly trying to get new leads at no expense other than their time should consider a list broker instead of a list rental agency. A marketer who rents lists will have access to hundreds, if not thousands, of lead generating companies, but those companies will only make money off of the leads you generate on your site if you plan to make some sort of profit from those leads. In contrast, if you choose to work directly with a list broker, you won’t have to worry about whether or not you’re going to be able to make some money off of the leads you do generate; the profits come all the way from the people who originally gave you their permission to sell their information.
Fourth, if you have any doubts whatsoever about the efficacy of a marketer who is renting email lists, it’s best to move along and don’t work with them at all. If you are uncomfortable with the prospect of renting a list and you absolutely cannot see yourself ever making any money from the leads you purchase, it’s probably best just to keep looking. The only people who seem to make a lot of money with list rentals are those who either own domain names that are worth a lot or have a reputation for building massive email opt-in lists that generate an incredible amount of traffic. However, these people usually own multiple domains and a pretty bad website or blog and a ton of outdated content on their websites.
Fifth, just because the business rents or buys email addresses does not mean that they don’t own or control the contents of those email addresses. It is entirely possible for someone to take your email address and masquerade it as someone else’s in order to try and send emails to you without your authorization or knowledge. This can be a real problem for anyone working in the online arena and particularly annoying if you have just gotten some new customers who expect to be getting your emails in a timely fashion. In addition to having to send you a cease and desist order for illegal email solicitation, you may also find yourself the target of cyber-squatting, which is when one business owns another website and uses your email address along with their own in an attempt to drive sales to their site. Just make sure you have a strong backup plan in place in case this happens and that the other business’ owner is willing to stop the attacks.
