There are many companies out there that claim to provide US based multi-channel fulfillment. Most of them have nothing to offer but empty promises and empty dreams of what can be done. But there are some companies out there that have been in business for a very long time and have built solid relationships with the US shipping and packaging industry.
So what do they have that other companies don’t? One thing they have that others don’t is a good freight delivery schedule. Freight companies depend on us to get the job done on time and at an affordable cost. If we cannot get them one week, then they are going to write us off and no one is going to offer to do business with us.
The type of logistics and multi-channel fulfillment that these companies provide is completely different than what other companies do. They don’t just have their own trucks and their own space. They actually rent warehousing and fulfillment facilities from a third party. That third party is called a shipper and their warehouse is located in either a big city or a small town. They will lease the warehouse and the shipping dock and access the port of call for their containers of finished goods that come in and out of their warehouse.
The third party warehouse facility is an ideal place to locate for shipping and receiving. It reduces on labor costs. It also reduces on environmental hazards. In fact, shipping and receiving are one of the cleanest forms of logistics. Companies that do this have fewer problems with their employees clocking in and out or with their products getting damaged in their warehouse.
Multi-channel fulfillment involves shipping and receiving through a number of different vendors. For example, a company could have a local fulfillment company that ships all of their paper products and parts to them. They might also ship to Canada. There are many other types of multi-channel fulfillment vendors that US companies can use.
This warehouse is often referred to as a “hub”. The US companies simply enter their inventory lists into the computer system of the warehouse that works in conjunction with the company’s computer software. The software takes the orders and information about each order, place an order with the supplier and enter the order information into the computer systems of the warehouse and the supplier. The warehouse then places the orders with the shipper of the products. This entire process is automated and makes it easy for companies to increase their inventory by purchasing products that they never even had the chance to look at.
US companies often have to buy shipping trailers to get their products shipped. But with warehouses, they don’t need to rent a container for shipping. The companies simply to stock the warehouse with packing supplies and inside the warehouse are pallets of boxes that are filled up with the products that the company has ordered. Instead of paying for shipping costs on per box, the company simply buys one pallet, pays for the cost of the shipping and then puts the product in the truck of the shipping company. It saves them money and time by reducing the need for shipping costs.
These warehouse operations make it easy for businesses to be able to have the type of scale needed to meet their business goals. Many US based multi-channel fulfillment companies have their own manufacturing facilities in the United States as well. In fact, some fulfillment centers are located in the US, but they ship to Canada and several European countries. That means that the products that enter the US can have the same quality and standards as products that are shipped out of the country. Having this type of multi-channel fulfillment service in place can dramatically increase the number of products that a company can sell at any given time.
