Order fulfillment is at the most basic level the entire process from point of purchase to delivery of a purchased item to the end user. It is often difficult for the consumer to know how to fill in the order forms and then place an order with the company that they have chosen. Many companies will actually charge a fee per order when a consumer fills out the order forms. It is imperative that all customers be educated on the process of filling out the order forms so that they are properly able to fill them out when they place the order with the company that they choose.
Not only is the company responsible for the ordering process, but it is also responsible for the delivery and the shipment of the purchased items to its designated destination. The order fulfillment process can and does take time. For every item that is purchased, there must be an item or goods that are being delivered. This is especially true if there are thousands of pieces that are being delivered at one time.
Order fulfillment is normally handled by the receiving warehouse. A receiving warehouse is simply a warehouse that is specifically designed to handle the incoming shipments. These warehouses are staffed with professionals who will place the orders for the specific products that are being received. This includes slotting, receiving, and shipping all of the shipments as needed throughout the day.
One of the first places that the receiving warehouse will visit is the manufacturing warehouse. This is where the actual manufacturing of the product occurs. This is a very large warehouse that will store all of the raw materials that are being used to manufacture the item that is going to be sold. The warehouse will pack and label each of these items as well as label the boxes that are going to be filled with the appropriate material. This is where the company will create the inventory for the item. The inventory is essentially the amount of stock that the manufacturer has available in order to fulfill all of the orders that they have received for the item.
Once the receiving inventory has been generated, the fulfillment center will place all of the orders together. This includes placing an order for the shelf space, pallet placement, and the picking of the materials that will be handled for a particular sale. All of this is going to be handled on a daily basis for ecommerce fulfillment businesses.
Along with this, there are other factors that can be used to improve the overall effectiveness of the logistics strategy. One of the first things that many companies look into when they are looking at fulfillment services is shipping costs. Shipping costs can easily add up for a company if they do not take the time to really evaluate the shipping costs for their fulfillment strategy. This is especially true if the customer does not have a good understanding of the shipping costs that they will incur. This means that they may not be able to effectively evaluate a shipping cost reduction strategy unless they take the time to learn about the various shipping methods that can be used.
The last thing that can be used as part of the fulfillment strategy is packaging practices. Every business should make sure that they are taking the appropriate steps to pack the items that they are sending to customers in proper packaging. If the packing practices of the shipping provider are not up to par, then the customer is going to feel as though they are getting a bad deal when they are purchasing from that specific shipping provider. By learning more about the different types of packaging that different companies utilize, it is possible to get a better idea of what the best option is for your company.
By understanding the various aspects of the fulfillment process, it is easy to see how a transportation-based 3PL can help with an overall improvement in productivity. The best companies are the ones that take the time to learn about the various facets of their business, both from a logistical and a transportation-based standpoint. If your organization is doing this, you are going to see an improvement in productivity, profitability, and even in customer satisfaction. Knowing how to properly package and ship products is a critical aspect of any shipping company, so make sure that you take advantage of understanding the fulfillment process.
